How easy is this to get into? Is it worth the money to get Apple Certified? If I don't find someone else to work for, is it worth doing on my own or is Mac repair dominated by Apple themselves? Thanks for any help.
My friend's husband just got into repairing Macs. He seems to be doing alright so far. However, he also repairs and builds PCs too. I think that's the way to go, cover all your bases. Heck, if you can get a job at an art college (art programs use Macs a lot), then you're set.
Just curious, are you thinking about doing this as a full-time gig, or just to supplement your current income? If the former (especially), have you written up a business plan yet? Sometimes, a few hours/days of trying to sort out the details can be a big benefit down the road.
Just checking. From what I paid Microcenter to install some RAM ($30, I think) in a Mac Mini, it seems like there is some money to be made there. Of course, I did it because I didn't want to be liable if the shell cracked. I understand that some of their other services are fairly pricey for what they offer -- I want to say $59 to install a new HDD without transferring data, etc. -- it seems like you could make some money doing it.
Keep an eye on the market for macs. The most you can ever expect to work with is the installed user base, and Mac market share isn't that great.
Your best bet is to partner up with a school that is Mac-heavy as a consultant (or even a wage employee). That is, unless you're plugged into a pretty extensive Mac community now who are not into doing their own repairs.
