repairing an MP3

Once in a while I would get these MP3s that Tag&Rename (an ID3 tagger) says is 0-bitrate. When that happens, EphPod (iPod manager) will fail to upload the file also. But other utilities, players and Windows' Explorer can display the bitrate & play the file just fine. Also, "lame --decode" doesn't give off any errors. I've read some VBR files have incorrect headers, but these files are CBR. Here's what I've tried:

- removing ID3 v1 and v2 tags.
- MP3-Tag Studio's CR/LF fix, remove junk data, VBR header fix - it says "not a VBR file" even if I force it
- VBRFIX (willwrap.co.uk) - It complains that its not a VBR, but even when I set it to write anyway, it doesn't help
- mp3Trim & mp3DirectCut - even extreme trimming doesn't seem to help

I don't really want to decompress & recompress these... Any other ideas?

dunno about other players. . but foobar (foobar2000.org) as an option to fix MP3 (VBR) headers. So, i'd try that or google for programs that fix mp3 / vbr headers.

I tried foobar2000... I changed it to 588/0 and a few others and it didn't seem to affect the file. The bitrate stayed at 0. :(
