So I got my hands on a free but broken 3g iphone.

the glass is cracked. No idea on the lcd. There's no waterdamage atleast the sensors are not tripped.

Plugging it in in doesn't turn on and itunes doesn't see it. it does get warm like as if the battery is charging. I'm basing that on my ipod touch. when I charge the back where the battery is gets warm.

replacing the digitizer, lcd are fine and relatively cheap. about 50 bucks and time.

My only concern is that it doesn't register when its plugged into the pc and it could be something more costly.

If its only 50 bucks and time I'm happy. I'll just jailbreak and unlock and I have a 16gb pda/ipod.

If its more I'll have to really think about it.

fwiw, I cracked the screen on my 3G. The touch feature and screen still worked. Sold it on eBay for $240 and got a new 3GS instead.

You don't even have to jailbreak to not use it as a phone, either pull the SIM, or put it into Airplane Mode. You can still use WiFi that way.

FYI if you pull out the SIM, it won't let you access the apps :( It goes into "Emergency dial only" mode if there's no SIM present.

If you pull the SIM, it will work fine as long as you do not try to restore it.

I just pulled the SIM from my Gen1 iPhone and I can access apps just fine.

I went to China and Japan with my 3G this past April. I pulled the SIM so I would not accidentally end up charged for anything.

It worked just like it did before, except for the phone and data part (Though the Wifi did work on our cruise ship).
