Hi,
Any opinions if it is worth repairing a 17" MAG Innovision MXP17F monitor. It served me well for 5 1/2 years. I thought I got a decent price on it when I bought if for about $830 shipped in '95.

I heard an electric poping sound come from the back when I turned it on for the last time. I suspect the tube is Ok and some component in the back shorted out. Now when I turn it on I get nothing at all. The power on light doesn't go on. The options LCD doesn't light. It is totally silent. It used to make lots of noise. Relays clicking. Degausing. Static electric sounds from the screen.

Anybody think I can get it fixed for less than $100? It might be just replacing one part. I tried to open the back (only after letting it sit for a couple of days to let any residual juice drain), but it is too complicated. I broke a few of the plastic clips that hold the case on. Then I discovered inside the plastic case is a metal grill case. I doubt I can open it all up without destroying it. And then I doubt I have the skill to correctly diagnose and fix the problem.

Any one have some thoughts about this?

Thanks,
JayR

A monitor that old probably isn't worth spending money on. It would no doubt cost at least $100 for the smallest repair and what do you wind up with? An old monitor with one new part.

Newegg has 17" monitors for $130 and up. Pricewatch has them for $85 and up (add shipping, of course). Or, check the "Hot Deals" forum. There are always monitor deals popping up there.

Good Luck

I can speculate that the high voltage flyback circuit is out on your monitor. I would estimate approx 1+ hour labor plus parts. Definitely more cost effective to buy new especially at today's prices.

thanks everyone for the advice. In hot deals I saw that the 19" KDS trinitron monitor was on clearance at OD. So I tooled on over and picked up the last one in Gaithersburg, MD for a cool $183. Wahoooo!!!
