The left seems to assume that any white person that says anything that could be remotely racists must in fact be a racist.
I don't know if I qualify as "the Left", but I will admit assuming that any white person who grew up when and where Representative Westmoreland did should understand the overtones of "uppity" and avoid it, especially as applied to a black couple.

Reminder that this is the asshole that raised a hue stink to get the 10 commandments put up but then couldn't name more than 3 on Colbert's show.

I never knew "uppity" had racial overtones until seeing this thread just now.

I hate it when people raise a stink over colors.

But seriously, who can't name more than 3 commandments?

I didn't either  It's certainly plausible that someone wouldn't know what it meant. More plausible than a congressman intentionally referring to a black presidential candidate in a racially offensive way.

More Canadian racists, no wonder so many of them move here
The strategy here is to discipline uppity nation-states, like Georgia
Marketwatch.com is racists as well
They consider conservative women 'uppity,'
Andrew Sullivan on Georgia (the country) Who knew Georgia was so damn racist?
But what are we to do now that Russia has stomped on uppity Georgia?
Racist Australians!!!! Damn them to hell!! We must re-ban Dug777 because of this.
It must have hurt, but once again Palin had triumphed over those who'd sought to destroy this uppity woman,

BTW Sarah Palin has been called uppity how many times already?? How come no one freaked out about that?
Oh this makes sense. When white suburban kids trying to act cool call each other my n****r that means it's not a racist term.

Name one prominate Democrat who has called Palin uppity.

Remember when Obama made comments warning, people will try to says he's not like us, has a funny sounding name and doesn't look like the Presidents on our currency? People bitched and moaned he was playing the race card. What he actually did was make a preemtive strike.

Here it is and there is more to come.

soo true.

A white southerner from Georgia calls a Black man "uppity" and some people think it's NOT racist?

Spin it any way you want, there is no way anyone can get away with that

Pleading ignorance or not, I am sure there are plenty of Southerners (or people anywhere for that matter) that heard it as a racist remark. In politics thats all that matters.

I wonder if Westmoreland enjoys sucking on the foot he inserted in his mouth?

I guess we are socially retarded. I grew up north of the mason dixon line, moved down here to GA almost 12 years ago, and never had heard that term used in any way derogatory before. So we can't use that uppity word ever again it sounds like. How about if we are talking about non black person, would that be okay? Wouldn't that in itself be racist, not being able to use a word to one race? Like I said before, the only non-black people that knew it was racist are racists themselves.

Because we didn't live a sheltered life and had the misfortune of hearing it used by Racists in a derogatory way to describe blacks who didn't know their place? WTF kind of pretzel logic is that?

I'll bet democrats need to get out the word to blacks that uppity is racist for this to have any effect. I've lived in Alabama my whole life, and I've never thought of "uppity" as racially insensitive. I think just using the word insensitive entitles someone to a punch in the face, because I'm fucking sick of it.

I think "unbelievable" is denying the roots and history of the word and saying that because YOU don't think it's a racial term means that it isn't a racial term to anyone.

I've lived in FL my whole life and I know for sure, precisely what "uppity" means. There is no context that can be provided that will alter its meaning.
Then I suggest you start reading my links and educate yourself.
All of them were from BEFORE this who thing came to light.
And several of them are from foreign countries!!!! Damn racists all over the world it seems.

It is, indeed, possible for non-blacks to be called "uppity". The term may, indeed, be used by non-southerners.

It is, however, categorically impossible for someone to have grown up in Georgia in the 1950s and 1960s and NOT understand the racial overtones of a Southern white applying that term to a black man and woman.

All the apologists are either playing stupid or really are socially retarded. I immigrated to Canada, haven't lived anywhere near the south and even I know what uppity means when applied to a black person.

When someone suggests that a white person born in 1950 in a place with Jim Crow laws doesn't know it has racial overtones, it just leaves me speechless.

What's even more saddening, is that people believe him, or believe that it has zero racial implications, I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and know exactly how bad that word was when associated with another word, and even on it's own, one could surmise exactly what was implied.
Now, to top all this off, it was that fucktard from GA, who wanted the 10 commandments displayed, but couldn't list them? Jebus Horatio Cristobal. That's just sad, depressing and sad.
OPEN YOUR GODDAMNED EYES AMERICA. WAKE THE FUCK UP.

DEFINITION OF UPPITY

1. Presumptuous, above oneself, self-important.
I think you are one very uppity young man.

Exactly what Obama is. Westmoreland is spot on. Furthermore, there is no racist connotation, as proven by Wikitionary.

Again, this is what he had to say about all this. Note that he confirms that he used the word for its proper meaning....

"I?ve never heard that term used in a racially derogatory sense. It is important to note that the dictionary definition of ?uppity? is ?affecting an air of inflated self-esteem ? snobbish.? That?s what we meant by uppity when we used it in the mill village where I grew up.

Please, now Democrats, start winning elections fairly, stop trying to play the race or discrimination or victim card because that ain't gonna help you, as McCain is blowing Obama away after both conventions in the poll. People ain't buying your sh*t.

Definition does not = implication. Really, does that have to be spelled out in small words? And McCain blowing Obama off after both conventions? I really don't think a 1 point lead is blowing someone off, and usually blowing someone off, usually, maybe not in GA, means avoiding them, ignoring them. I guess, and being the presumptuous liberal I am, you mean 'blowing away'.
Then again, I was just trying to go by what you were implying.

Uppity is in the dictionary. There is just no racist connotation. This is a pure invention from the DP and the Obama Campaign.

Pure invention??? uppity being associated with racism is pure invention by the DP and Obama campaign? Really? Do they let you out in the yard at all? Any type of interpersonal relationships with anyone outside your immediate family?
Wow, that's just sad, and even more sad, I'm totally not surprised.

edit:self grammar check...

How can someone from Georgia claim not to know the term "uppity" has racial overtones and keep a straight face? I hope Senator McCain mans up and puts this neo-Klan moron in his place. There's no place for this crap in 21st century America!

(Or am I hopelessly naive?)

edit: fixed missing " in title

Interesting, I honestly had no clue "uppity" had racial overtones until I read this thread - I always thought it was a term for someone who came across as having a superiority complex, etc... Sounds like more PC bullshit to me from people who are looking for any and all excuses to keep racial sensitivity front and center in this election and not focused on issues.
