Isn't it inappropriate to modify a members name into a racial slur??

Yeah and if someone had called Condoleezza Rice uppity, the GOP would all of a sudden know what the word means again when used to describe someone of color. Given Westmoreland's age and geographical location, I am confident he has heard the term uppity n***** many times before. He just used poor a very poor choice of words.

How many of you people jumping up and down over the word 'uppity' actually live in the south??

You seem to think that people go around using the n-word left and right like its 1960 still.

I lived in Mobil Alabama, the heart of the south, and you never heard the n-word, unless it was two black people talking to each other. And I NEVER heard the word 'uppity' used to describe anyone.
There is still racism, but it is no where near as open as you guys seem to think it is. You don't hear people going around and talking down about blacks or other groups.

I've never heard the term used that way in real life, just the movies.

"Uppity" means they act as if they are better than others. (Arrogant, snobby etc)

here is the etymology:

uppity
1880, from up; originally used by blacks of other blacks felt to be too self-assertive (first recorded use is in "Uncle Remus"). The parallel British variant uppish (1678) originally meant "lavish;" the sense of "conceited, arrogant" being first recorded 1734.

I think there are some people that think of the British version and are genuinely surprised by it's racial overtones. Then there are some people who pretend they have no clue it has racial overtones, know it truly does, and only use it for this reason (it doesn't take a genius to see Westmoreland is part of this group) Then there are some that can freely admit to the history of the word and either use it or don't use it for that reason.

You post as if you think you have credibility. I hear it all the time here in Boston and you are going to tell me that it's not used by some Whites in Mobil AL?

Mobile, damn it.

Is South Carolina south enough for you?
What about Birmingham? I lived there during the church bombings, and experienced both George Corley Wallace's governorship and the integration of Jefferson County schools. I saw morons in Hoods and Cloaks to "celebrate" our first integrated homecoming football game. I admit it's not nearly as bad (or maybe just not as blatant) as it was then, but Racism still lives.

How in the HELL is that racist? He IS uppity, especially his wife.
The term has been historically used in the South almost EXCLUSIVELY to refer to blacks who don't "know thier place" and attempt to rise to positions and status which "should be reserved for white people." This judgement could be used for all kinds of judgements and situation.

The word historically was actually a very strong racially derogatory term when used in this way, especially since blacks judged as "uppity" often were targetted for lynching.

Given Westmoreland's age and the fact he grew up in the South, its simply not plausible he didn't basically know this.

That may be the "historical usage" but the modern usage refers to rich people.

in this context, how could it even be considered racist? Obama's not black.
Obviously the traditional standard in the South imposed by White racists was "one drop" of African blood. Barack Obama looks black, and would have BY LAW been considered black under the Jim Crow laws of the South which Westmoreland grew up with while they were still in place.

I agree with his position that political partisans need to drop all their self-centered hackery. This thread is a great example of what he talks about.

I've lived in FL my whole life and I know for sure, precisely what "uppity" means. There is no context that can be provided that will alter its meaning.
Then I suggest you start reading my links and educate yourself.
All of them were from BEFORE this who thing came to light.
And several of them are from foreign countries!!!! Damn racists all over the world it seems.

It is, indeed, possible for non-blacks to be called "uppity". The term may, indeed, be used by non-southerners.

It is, however, categorically impossible for someone to have grown up in Georgia in the 1950s and 1960s and NOT understand the racial overtones of a Southern white applying that term to a black man and woman.

All the apologists are either playing stupid or really are socially retarded. I immigrated to Canada, haven't lived anywhere near the south and even I know what uppity means when applied to a black person.

When someone suggests that a white person born in 1950 in a place with Jim Crow laws doesn't know it has racial overtones, it just leaves me speechless.

I'd say 50/50 it was intentional. I've heard it both ways....not as a slur, and as a slur.

Its funny you do that everytime.

Perhaps he doesn't look at Obama and automatically think "oh he is black better not use the word uppity or talk about oreo cookies."

The left seems to assume that any white person that says anything that could be remotely racists must in fact be a racist.
