renting a room from a friend

okay so basically i've been living at this place with a mont to month contract and i'm gonna have to move out since my roommates are moving out and I don't want to find 2 new roommates. I talked to my friend and he offered me a room at his place. only problem i see is that I'm not signing anything with the landlord. Are there ways to protect myself in these situations?
