Renting a car being under 25, is it a myth?

I want to visit a cop friend down in Virginia. I am from NY and being 22 years old my 89 Wrangler wont hold up to the 4 hours of driving. It went to crap after i drove it 2 hours to a casino, i love gambling. So i want to rent a car.

Now i know i should be greatful to get anything to get there, but since this will be my only vacation this year, i want a convertible. We all know how most anandtechers go all out.

If anyone knows of a company that rents cars to people my age please let me know. I found one place that would but wanted like 800 for a week. Crazy stuff.

I'm a AAA member if that helps at all.

I think its orbitz.com that lists rental car places. It was an extra $50 per day, last I looked.

I rent cars all the time and I have never been asked my age.

If you want to get the best rates, do it on the internet. Go to the rental company's websites and check out the prices. All they care about is if you have a drivers licence and a credit card.

Not a myth. When i turned 21, i was able to rent one from sears (Budget) for about $25/day. That included the being-under-25 fee.

I've rented a few times from here in nyc and it cost me a whole lot. I paid at least $25 extra for each day of rental. The best thing to do is look in the yellow pages cause some of these places can work around a deal for you.

Car rental is so much cheaper in other states.

Na, you're not the only one.

btw, one thing you should watch out for if you rent onling. Some of the companies (like Hertz I think) have their underage policy online but they don't calculate when you book it online. They add up the total value once you pick up the car. And if you want to rent online go to travelocity.com so that you can compare prices.

I wish there was an Alomo here in NYC. They're cheap like hell down in Florida.

I must be missing something. I have never been asked my age. I have rented cars in person at the counter of the rental company as well as on the internet. Never has there been a question regarding age. Would someone please explain why, or how, you are being asked your age?

Maybe when they copied your driver's license and stuff they found out on their own.

That, and do you look older?

When I book online I don't give my DL. I get a price. When I show up at the agency I do show my DL and possibly that is where it comes in. It sound like age discrimination in reverse, if what you say is true.

What's carbon dating? Is it two carbon atoms getting together to form a molecule or is it two teenagers making whoopee next to a smoldering campfire?

I believe in NY it is illegal to reject anybody based on their age. They are allowed to charge you more though (I believe it's extra $50 a day)
