So I just moved into an apartment, and I need some insurance. Any recommendations out there from personal experience? Thanks! :D

We use liberty mutual and it is pretty painless to get, plus not that expensive....I recommend it to anyone who has anything that is remotely valuable...if you have Jewelery or anything like that you will have to add it seperately though but it will be fully covered against loss theft or damage.

I had Farmers a few years ago when I was in an apartment and then when we rented a house. It was pretty cheap, I think around 100 for the year.

That sounds pretty reasonable. I need to get some myself. I've been debating it for the last 4 or 5 years.

What exactly gets covered? Am I covered if John Doe upstairs burns down the place? Stuff in your car covered? Tree falling on your pad in bad weather? Maybe I should just call somebody...

Your car would be covered by your car insurance, not renter's.

I would inquire with local insurance companies such as Allstate, Farmer's, State Farm, etc.

I have renter's insurance through American Family (not available in GA) with $16,000 coverage which costs me $100/yr and I get a 20% off discount on my car insurance which is also through AMFAM.

I'd check the place you get your car insurance from first. Often if you have more than one type of insurance from them you get a discount on both. For me the discounts added up to just about the price of the renter's insurance (meaning the cut in my car insurance made the renter's insurance basically free). I use State Farm.

Will this cover my laptop if my stupid sister drops it or something?

The moron is always running around with the thing like if it's a damn toy.

You should see her cellphone, it looks like its gone through a war zone, and that doesnt include the ones she has actually broken.

Make sure you get the replacement cost option. Otherwise, you'll get paid the depreciated value of your stuff if you have to make a claim.

Just wondering. Homeowners insurance can cover stuff in your car. My car policy only covered damage and things like that. For extras inside, CD Book, extra speakers, clubs, etc... were covered under my parents home owners insurance.

American Family has always been incredibly cheap for me. I insure my house, 3 cars, and my life with them. You get discounts for multiple things so if you insure your apartment there and you move your car there, you get it cheaper.

Getting ready to get car and renter's insurance thru them. Liberty Mutual has a group discount for my employer (they also offer group discounts for many colleges/universities...look into it! :) )

Computers are covered if they are stolen or in teh even of a fire, but not for wear and tear or dropping or losing.
You will need to get a seperate rider for it, which is SO worth it. For our laptop, i think it added like 35$ to our renters.
Definatly check into it.
