Rented a PS2 game and having problems!

I rented a copy of madden 2001 for my PS2 today and noticed it was scratched and thought nothing of it. It went through the intro video fine and then it went to loading screen, finished loading and then nothing happend. I left it for a few mins and nothing! I tried rubbing the cd with some water and a cleanex but that didnt help. NO i dont have a game doctor nor am i going to get one to fix someones elses game. Any ideas on how i may be able to fix this??
