I'm going to be staying in Hawaii for about a week by myself over the summer. The cost of an economy rental car is something crazy like $480, $175 over the standard over 25 cost of $305. Anyone know of any companies that have lower fees for drivers under 25?

I'm going to be driving to photo vistas at times of my own choosing, so I can't be confined to tours and such.

Also, do any of the rental companies offer manual transmission cars, hopefully for cheaper than automatic?

I think last time I was in Hawaii I paid $250 for 10 days including tax. You have a couple of options. First, priceline works great, just include that fee into your bid. I'd try for $20/day or something like that for an economy. Also, I have had GREAT luck with this site: http://www.carrentalinhawaii.com/

Last year we used them, as well as a few years ago. A few of the rental agencies wave your under 25 fee when you book through them. They also have great rates.

Yay!!!! I've always been boggled by the prices on rental sites. For the price of a one week rental, I might as well buy a junker for $500 and then sell it off for $300 or something afterwards.

The answer to your other question. As far as I know, no rental companies rent out vehicles with manual transmission. Too much of a liability for people to burn the cluthces out or blow the transmission.

I rented a car from Enterprise at the Honolulu Airport location for $19.99 a day for a "standard" car. No underage fee. At Enterprise, you can always negotiate at the counter about upgrades, sometimes a bargain.

You can get manual transmission rental cars in Europe or the UK, in the USA, you can get
manual transmission cars from the "exotic" rental car places, which will cost you an arm and a leg.

Thanks for the answers on the manual transmission question. I guess I'm out of luck for stick shift, a big bummer driving in Hawaii, or anywhere for that matter.

You can try to find a local place that rents them. There used to be a place on the Big Island that offered cars that blended in better with the locals. You stick out like a sore thumb when you drive a stock Jeep or Sebring there :p
