Do I have to buy the insurance from the rental car company? I am reading my car insurance policy, the way I read it makes me think that I should be covered even when I am not driving my own car. What's your take?

In many states, rentals are called non-owned autos as opposed to temporary substitute autos. In either case, you will be covered, provided it is not being used in any business/govt type purposes. Usually exclusions are listed after the various insuring agreemnets, conditions, etc. Call your insurance company for a more detailed explaination.

Basically, if you get in an accident and use your primary insurance (the one on your personal car) for coverage, it will be noted on your record and thus your premiums may skyrocket. Taking the rental center's insurance will make them become primary so your personal insurance record is unaffected. Also note many credit cards have insurance protection but it's secondary -- only Diners club and I think one type of amex card will be primary.

No, you don't have to buy insurance from the rental company. Generelly, it's a bad idea--their CDW is incredibly expensive. The only reason I could see to take the CDW is if you only have liability on your own car.

Read your policy to be sure, but every auto policy I've ever had has covered me while driving rented or borrowed cars.
