Hey guys,

I'm planning a trip with my family from LA to SF and I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Cadillac ATS? Also we're 4 people travelling so I'm wondering if you think the car will fit 4 big luggages... I know this isn't a typical car forum but I usually get referred to this site when wondering about cars, so there you go.

Thanks!

N.

No, no, no. The back seat area is small and not suited to carrying people for long distances. This, according to the dealer. You need an SUV.

Hey!

Thanks for getting back so fast. I'm thinking the CTS? I heard it's way bigger. We're not driving for that long (few hours every day) and the driver wants a fun car to drive. SUV's are big and comfy but they're not very fun, are they? What SUV would you suggest?

Thanks!

The 2014 CTS has a decent back seat.

If you're set on a caddy get an XTS... they actually aren't bad for a big car.

Yea CTS would be better. More room and better base motor.

I really wish they would remove the base 2.5L from the ATS.

Fun in a rental car - Rentals are base motor models generally. Check the Hertz Prestige Collection out and go from there.

You are looking for comfort with 4-people plus luggage unless you expect your passengers to be ill from motion sickness.

Hey.

When I say "have some fun" I meant fly something a bit more powerful, more comfortable (leather seats) with decent technology. Hertz' Prestige Collection is a bit over our budget ($1900 for 9 days while our budget is around $1000 max). The Cadillac CTS is surprisingly cheap on Alamo.com (around $800)... All the SUVs that I've found so far seemed to be quite basic (Santa Fe, Escort, etc).

I went and test drove a 2.0 performance ATS. Even that engine was disappointing. Maybe its okay when you're really hammering on it, but day to day traffic it was always off boost. Can't imagine how bad the 2.5 must be.

Fun rental car that is big enough for 4 pp and baggage? No question - Dodge Charger. The trunk is cavernous! These are very common at rental lots and the base V-6 is more than adequate.

The new re-designed Chevy Impala is also capacious, but most rental places charge more for it.

Please be careful - Drive safe.

My girlfriend is going to do most of the driving and she's definitely not going to opt for the Dodge Charger. The Cadillac CTS was already hard to sell her (she says it looks like a gangster's car --- she usually drives an Audi A1).
Does the Chevy Impala have a bigger trunk than the Cadillac CTS? It looks the same to me.

The new impala is a little bigger than the CTS so that is also a good car.

I chose the CTS instead of the Impala (which was cheaper but doesn't seem as fancy as the CTS). Thanks for your advice!

I rented a CTS in 2009 and was pleased with it. It handled the drive to Park City in the snow and was fun on the canyon roads.
