i put up with three years of scumbag Realtors in college towns before spending a year in the place I am now. Just need to hunt out the people who aren't just out to fuck over as many people as possible.

The whole application sound very shady. Call the BB.

it's so when you default they know where they can go for money w/the sheriff (nothing stops you from closing the account tho)

This happened in my case. I gave the account numbers and the day after they checked my credit and approved I closed the account and got one with another bank. Zing!

Haha that's a good idea, gotta keep it in mind for future. Thanks :=)

I was talking to a manager at the place and she said you don't make 3x the rent you need a cosigner. That's no problem, but she says the cosigner has to local or within one hour. I said that was very strange, she says they physically drive to the cosigner if you default.

Also looking at the application,

They ask for Checkings, Savings, and Credit Card account numbers, which seems a little shady.

The cosigner thing is weird, but I make enough that it shouldn't be a problem.

Is asking for account numbers even legal?

You live out of state so the circumstances might be different. Look around and if you do encounter the same type of circumstances, then it might be the standard in dealing with out of state students.

Try to look at their perspective if you try to default and not pay rent. How would you deal with the situation? Do you think what they are asking reasonable?

It's been almost 3.5 years since I have been out of college but I am Turkish, don't have U.S. citizenship, didn't have any verifiable income in the U.S., just had some pay slips from Turkey and rented from a company that manages over 5000 properties and never ever had to provide any 3x income stuff or account/CC numbers. Just rent elsewhere. Seriously.

I don't know if these people actually thought this through before asking for account numbers and such. Let's say if you default, that means you have NO MONEY; so, what were they hoping to achieve with the account numbers?

Legal? I don't know, but I'd balk at giving them any actual Credit Card numbers. That's out of hand.

Yeah requesting credit card #s is fishy. My current complex we're at did require bank account information. It's not Section 7 (If that's the right term, I forget) housing but they do have an income cap.

I'd just walk away. If the deal sounds so great that you can't resist, then it just makes it seem all that much more like a scam.

The general MA rental application asks for all that info, but lots of places will tell you not to bother filling them out or to just give them all info except an account number. . However, I have seen a bunch of legit places require that info before. And, yes. If you do not make 3x the rent amount, you usually do need a cosigner.

The cosigner being close....I have not heard before.

Speaking of this, does anyone have a template for a rental application where the owner would also be living in the household. In other words, I'm not looking for the standard leaser/leasee agreement.

they can run credit checks without account numbers.............................................

I say do not fill this form out. Tell them you have no problem submitting to a credit check or proving you can afford the place but you're not giving them all of your account numbers.

In an unstable economy they are trying to cover their butts. I find this less crazy then asking for all of your account numbers. They want you to make 3x the rent ammount so if you get fired you could still live there for a month while looking for a new job and not default.

Physically driving to the cosigner's place is a little militaristic but understandable. They are just pulling a CYA (cover your ass).

It has nothing to do with the economy. They have always been doing this. But you are right. Thare are just trying to pull a CYA.

They don't need your account numbers... you can do a background and credit check, and have a legal contract without requiring credit card or bank account numbers.
