From what I gather, "20 boys and young men" were the reason straight edge is now a gang label in Reno.

Thoughts?

I'm straight-edge, but I don't hate people who drink/smoke. Besides, it is incredibly fun screwing with intoxicated people.

Committing violence against people that don't live by or agree with their puritanical beliefs, damn near sounds like muslim terrorists.

If they have members that are attacking people randomly, then fsck 'em.

?We?ve had more crime attributed to Straight Edge than any criminal street gang this year.?

Really straight.

Sounds like a gang to me.

Why do you say that?

I think he meant the idiots that the article focussed on.

Every idealogy has its fair share of morons :(

If that's the case, they should classify "Islam" as a gang.

Authorities describe Straight Edge attacks as random, opportunistic, violent beatings that can be spurred by minor comments from nonmembers. Members ? who sometimes use bats, shovels, knives, brass knuckles and Mace ? don?t engage in violence unless they can outnumber their targets, police said.
Any point in reading further?

Organized group violence? They have identified 20 people as "violent Straight Edge members" so they call those who adhere to the straight edge philosophy as gang members? HAHAHA. Funny.

There are straight edge gangs around here and they're nothing to laugh at or question whether they are gangs. They are for real.

?Straight Edgers tend to attack other teens who are publicly engaging in activities Straight Edgers don?t agree with, such as smoking or drinking.
?It?s ironic and disappointing that otherwise good kids are committing crimes to promote their own personal philosophy,?

Not that I'm agreeing that their actions are good, well-intentioned, or correct, but...
isn't it illegal to drink alcohol if still a teenager?
And, if under 18, isn't it illegal to smoke cigarettes?
So, somehow laws against underage drinking and smoking are a "personal philosophy."
Or, do they mean "obeying the law" is a "personal philosophy"
Or, do they mean healthy habits "is a personal philosophy"

Bad choice of words by the police.
