Renewal time for several computers.

Kaspersky Internet Security? (antivirus & firewall)

or a free one like MSE plus Windows firewall?

Best choice?

First of all, you ask a mixed question, are you talking just an anti-virus or a do it all internet security suite?

If I had to just pick and choose from among payware all in one security suites, Kaspaersky would be my number one choice, and even if MSE is free, by itself and alone, MSE is basically worthless as an all in one security suite. The other joker in the deck, is that if you search for the deal, one can often find multi license Kaspaershy security suite deal dirt cheap.

But if we just choose to say, mirror mirror on the wall, what is the best anti virus on the planet, Kaspersky would be in the running, but many free AV's out preform MSE.

As for me, I refuse to use any security suite, think about it, its stupid because one should never be predictable. Face the facts, the bad guys malware writers have their own computers preloaded with various security suites, and they just keep refining their wares until it can penetrate various security suites. And then and only then do they release the new virus into the wild.

Thank you for your comments.

It's not "mirror mirror on the wall" because I've been using Kaspersky for a few years, so the learning I've accumulated is worth something. I know how to use it!

Still have 4 more days to decide, but leaning toward renewing the KIS licenses.

Thank you for posting.

I guess I am leaning toward doing what you said.

Still have a few more days until deadline, to see if any better ideas come up.
I just flat don't have time to delve too much into researching this stuff myself. Too busy!

You can throw all the gold you want at the Kaspersky or any other A/V but they won't protect you from Zero-Day exploits. That *is* why they are call ZERO-DAY exploits.

MSE is good software solution. They fell off pace a little bit with v2, but it is still very good software. ESET NOD32 should, arguably, been on your list of options for non-free suites though.

The most scary malware is those making use of 0day exploits for browser vulnerabilities. And here comes KIS to rescue with one of its great features, the "safe run" (my security zone). By adding your browser(s) to the "safe run application", you insure that any browser compromise doesn't lead to private data leakage. It isolates your web-browser from the rest of your computer, so any malicious websites you go on or software you run in SafeRun, your computer will be protected from. The malicious things will only have affect within the SafeRun, and outside, nothing will happen.

I dont think a 77 percent detection rate for script malware makes it a good av.

Sandboxes are not perfect which is what you just described.

77% is 1 single reading within 1 suite of tests. Overall score within that test suite is still 95.8%.

You could try the new Eset Smart Security 5 Beta and see how you like it. I've been using Eset for 4 years and i think it's a fantastic product!

Renew your KIS subscription.

I just renewed my KIS a few minutes ago.

It's just easier, because all the application rules, filtering rules, etc. can simply be carried forward.

I appreciate suggestions such as by Gamingphreek to try another brand, but in the end I decided to go with the choice that saves me time.

Thank you all!
