I am sure the answer to this question is simple but how would I go about changing the name of a file. Specifically the extension. e.g. if i would want to change billy.txt to billy.jnk how would i go about doing that. I always thought I would just hit F2 and then change the name. I try that but fopr the most it just changes it to billy.jnk.txt. What exactly am i doing wrong. Some file types show the extension when i hit rename some do not. Any ideas?

Do you have your prefrences set to show the file extension? if not change it so you do and then do it, or do it from dos.

in windows 2000 its under TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS -> VIEW -> uncheck HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS OF KNOWN FILE TYPES

this will turn the file name you see from "billy" to "billy.txt" you should be able to rename the file and change the extension now. it gets kinda messy when you forget to put file extensions on file names and the file isnt associated with any program.
