Renamed admin acct, receive error about permissions or access

This isn't my box and it's not another "I forgot my password" thread.

I can't remember the exact message, but running XP home sp2, I renamed the admin account using that hidden 'control userpasswords2' panel (as I have done many times in 2k) by clicking on "users must enter a username......" checkbox, highlighting the admin account, clicking on Properties, and changing the "admin" name to a custom user name. Gave that account a password and unchecked the privious checkbox regarding entering a user name. Then, I deleted the existing custom admin. account. I logged off, but when I tried to log back on I received this message about privilges or something like that. Mind you, it's not a password or user name issue, this I never saw before.

I guess I screwed myself as I can get into the box now. Is there any programs that would boot from a CD (since that is the only way I can think of gaining access to the HDD other than removing it from this box and temporary added it to another box that would allow me some ability to change permissions or whatever needs to be done??

Hope that made sense.

It was late, I was tired and didn't write down the message. I will next time I see the box or can get someone to write it down for me

You can boot it with a Linux LiveCD and mount your Windows drive. Ubuntu 6.06 is one of them. You will have read access to it that way.

The exact message should be "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction"

Check the registry to see if autologon is enabled: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon...delete AutoAdminLogon and reboot.

I didn't see the message. I questioned the wording and he claimed that was the message. It didn't sound correct to me either.

Anyway I tried to recreate this on my 2nd bootable drive that has a fresh install of XP Pro w/sp2. I couldn't. I created a new account w/ admin. priv., then deleted it and renamed the admin. account, but no error message.

Using a program as UBCD4Win that gives me registry access, would that work?
