Well here goes. I challenge you all to build the ultimate wu cruncher for only 100 dollars.

Basically I just found a 100 dollar bill laying in my desk drawer. 😀 And I wanna spend it on a wu crunchin machine. It needs to be able to some how send the results. Sneaker net is fine. It will need a powersupply. No monitor needed. No other requirments than that. Can have multiple motherboards, cpus anything goes. It will need a HD. But if you can find a 1gig hd for 10 buck on ebay list it!

Well I hope you all atempt this. I have spent to much time on it already and cannot decide what is the best route.

Hmm, I'd bet someone in For Sale/Trade would come up with a combo to offer! 😀 How about post a thread there saying "WTB best Board/CPU/RAM combo you got, $90 shipped!" or something along those lines?

duron 800 $26 Pricewatch
Chaintech 7AIV2 $42.98 Pricewatch
PC-133 64 meg generic $10 Pricewatch
Power Magic atx 300 watt $11 pricewatch
floppy $8.00 pricewatch (though a good computer show could net one at $1-$4)
IBM network card $5.00

all this comes just over budget by $2.98

run the Floppy linux version of seti, no hard drive needed and it will send and receive work units through the network

For around £100 i could probably get a Duron 1.2ghz, 128mb pc133 and psu from work 🙂

But that's like $130ish

Confused

I built one based on a biostar M7VKQ board I got from Newegg $36.50 refurb S/V/L onboard. Will take all AMD socket A up to XP 2000, SDR ram. I used a 1gig Duron $34 Fan $9 ram $10 used CD $5 450meg HD $5 250watt PS free. Put it in a milkcrate booted from CD to install Win98. This system is upgradable. $99 total cost. I would recomend this board highly for a node. You can overclock 12% in Bios. Only $50 new. And most importantly it is upgradable. I have built three of these systems they run fine with a 250watt PS.
