Removing WinXP

I am looking to buy a refurb. PC pre-loaded with WinXP.

I am not a fan, so I want to use Win98.

Can I just format the PC, or has WinXP done something to HDs making it impossible to remove?
 
no, you can remove it, but honestly, why? you can get rid of the annoying XP stuff and then you get the benefits of an NT kernel (and NTFS if it is XP pro)...
 
well, I plan to do many upgrades to it for a co-worker, and my margin is low on the deal.

I don't want to get messed up with driver incompatibility, etc. I know the parts I am adding work great for 98. I want to get it upgraded and out the door, and not get called later because something does not work. Plus the user is used to Win 9x.

XP Home has NTFS also.

Honestly though, if it is compatable with Win 98 it will most likely be compatable with Win XP, plus it would be less work for you (you could always format and put 98 on there latere if they didnt like it).
