Ok so, I got a 7900gto sent to me through rma and it was great. It did low 40C's idle and I had no problems. Then about 2 months ago, I switched to water cooling, so I took off the huge heatsink(the awesome stock one) and wrapped it in some seran wrap(plastic food covering stuff) and left it alone. About a week later, I returned my pump in my wc because it was broken and put my heatsink back on. After a week, I would expect the remaining paste on it to have dried, but I didnt bother getting it off and reapplying. REASON BEING that last time I did this with a previous heatsink, I did it with 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol and it completely tarnished the copper base. Now my 7900gto is running at idle 60C with the same thermal paste as when I took it off. Can anybody tell me how to get the old coolant paste off without tarnishing the copper? Distilled water or something? Or if I do use the rubbing alcohol that I posess, how do I keep the copper from tarnishing? Thanks in advance
