This isn't directly related to our discussion, but I have heard that the 1002 BIOS for that board can result in significantly lower CPU temperatures. I don't know for certain if this is true, and definitely can't think of a reason why this would be, but I've heard it from at least a dozen different people, so it may be something worth looking into...

As for the temperature, AMD's listed absolute maximum is 90 degrees celsius, and you were very close to that, if not over it, but I've seen a CPU (as an experiment) jump to well over 100 degrees celsius without a heat sink before it started making annoying smells and pretty little wisps of smoke, so as long as you are still running stable, I think you're probably OK, just as long as you don't do it again... :)

Could be b/c each bios version try to compensate for the inaccuracy of the temp reading. Also, I'm not running any temp probe(Asus probe), it tend to raise the temp also. I'll just trust my nose next time. You can smell heat. My power supply fan(On AMD-2-400mhz) use to clog up & you have to give it a push to start it up. I can smell the heat from my case.

If you're purchasing the TaiSol, I recommend you also buy a package of extra thermal pads. I believe they are an extra $4.

Rudee:

That's a good suggestion if you plan to remove/replace the heatsink with any kind of regularity. If you just put it on and leave it, you shouldn't ever need another one, but moving it around a lot can damage the pad and make it much less effective. (Personally, I've put those pads on some other, cheap fans and had very good results with them as well as on the Taisol..)

Fardringle,

The 'change' in PCTC is a physical (could also be chemical) change in the compound. PCTC before the change is a semi-solid paraffin wax based substance. When it reaches the change temp (+/- 58c) it changes to a bubble-gum like consistency and as it does this it very effectively fills micro gaps between the hsf and cpu core. It remins in this 'gooey' state and won't squeeze out or run out.

Regarding the application of AS, if you hs is very smooth and level, an almost transparant layer gives the best results, if the surface is not so smooth a slightly thicker application is required. No fingers, the grease from your hands mess up the AS.

Does anybody know how much of a change in celsius there is between the pad that comes on the Taisol HS, and thermal paste such as artic silver? Just wondering how big of a difference there is.

the difference is only a couple of degrees celsius. DaddyG, I take it then that you recommend rnning the system for a minute or so without the fan on so that the bond can heat up and fill in the microgaps.

Absolutely, after 'cooking' temps usually drop 2-3c. As to the difference in AS and PCTC on a BIRD, about 2c if the AS is applied correctly. Check out other threads, some guy posted better temps with Radio Smack, course after setting him straight, he re-applied the AS a little thicker and did much better. BUT the point is, you might need to experiment with AS, PCTC is plug and play.

I had already scrape most of it, then try to rub it off with alcohol and nail polish remover. None of them work! Please help??

Robinhung - you just have to keep at it. I just took the pad off a GlobalWin last nite and it took about 20 mins, alternating between rubbing it with a balled-up tissue saturated (but not dripping) in Polish remover and then scraping the remaining pieces off. Once it looked like it was mostly gone, I wiped the area clean with more remover and then finished it off with alcohol to dry it.

scrape off as much as you can with your nails. Use toothpaste or wd-40 to get the rest off.
