I'm am trying to remove the thermal pad from my retail heatsink from a XP 1700+. I removed it with a credit card and I'm using the alcohol but there is still some residue that you can see at an angle.. It's like the outlining of the thermal pad. Should it be ALL gone or what? Is that good enough or should i do something else to it? What else should I do to get it off?

I've never been able to get rid of the "shadow" but I clean em up with a small piece of scotch brite pad. Interested to hear what others do and if totlal removal of the shadow is superfluous.

I take a hairdryer and heat it up enough until I can scrape most of the pad off with a credit card. After I get the large parts off I go back and put alcohol on it and let it set for several minutes making sure it does not all evaporate. I then scrape whatever is left off. I will finally take a cloth and wipe up the extra alcohol and it makes it nice and clean with no sticky parts.

well, I don´t think the shadow is a big problem.
In fact, it is supposed to be conductive material, so maybe
it is even beneficial, as it fills the microscopic holes of the aluminium, hehe (just joking)
