I just recently acquired some artic silver 2 and am ready to apply it to my cpu/heatsink (XP 1800) However, I originally had the heatsink on the cpu with the thermal pad. How do I get rid of the thermal pad stuff/ wax from the cpu and the heatsink so that I can apply the artic silver? Thanks a bunch for the help

PS. BTW does it really matter if I use 70% rubbing alcohol RATHER THAN 99% to clean and prepare heatsink/cpu for artic silver application?

Scrap the pad w/ a razor. Remove the remaining residue w/ alcohol. U can clean the core w/ alcohol as well. Try to clean it very well.

Then apply ASII as per their w/site instruction. And yes, cleaning the HSF & the core b4 applying ASII does matter.

So do I need to use the alcohol on the cpu to get rid of the thermal paste WAX thats already on it? Cause its all melted on it, around it. What should I use to scrape this off before using the alcohol? Or should I just use alcohol on the CPU?

Thanks

for cpu be carefull how you remove the thermal pad. use something to soften up the pad such as alcohol or nail polish remover. be carefull with this as you want it only on the processor. after you are done cleaning this up you can use liquid soap to finish up anything else left on the processor.

if you get any artic silver anywhere other than the cpu core be sure to remove it prior to putting the processor in your computer and starting it up. arctic silver will conduct.............use liquid dish soap to clean it up if it has went somewhere other than your cpu

on the heatsink you can remove the thermal pad with a razor.......being very carefull as to not gouge the heatsink and hurt yourself. once you have removed all you can then use alcohol or nail polish remover to finish it up.............

Nail polish remover and alcohol are fine on the cpu, just always finish with alcohol. Note sure if soap is a problem, but you definitely want zero residue before apply Artic2. That's where the alcohol comes in. Even finger grease and lint are bad news for Artic2.

Just to clarify further...when I said use razor to scrap the pad...I mean use the razor only to scrap the pad at the bottom of the HSF & NOT CPU. To clean the CPU core, use a lint free cloth soaked w/ alcohol.

The core & HSF need to be completely cleaned b4 applying ASII to get the optimal heat transfer.

I have a Thermaltake Volcano7 that I want to remove the black pad on the bottom. Would the above suggestions of using a razor to remove it work? I want to apply some AS2. LMK ASAP. Thanks.

Becareful if your going to use a razor to scrap the stuff off. C'os if you scrape, scratch, gouge the bottom of the heatsink... oh nelly!! Your not going to like the hellacious lapping your going to do to fix it!! So, be very careful on using anything sharp or pointy to scrape off the pad.

I picked up a TT Volcano 6Cu today and used a plastic spoon and rubbing alcohol to remove thermal pad. THEN I carefully applied AS2 to cpu core.

Apply only mild pressure when scrapping. I agreed u'll hv to be caruful not to scratch the HSF.
