I'm having trouble removing the small plug from the stock 6800GT cooler, so I can install another HSF. Any advice appreciated.

What kind of trouble are you having? If you're finding it difficult to get a grip on that small fan plug then use a pair of needle nose pliers. Take care not to apply too much pressure with them.

If it is the 2-pin fan connector that is giving you grief, try wedging the connector with a small, flat piece of PLASTIC. Avoid anything that could be hard enough to scratch your card should you slip. I made the mistake of using a small screwdriver tip to pry the connector out and put a tiny mark on my card- luckily, no damage done, but I was sweating until I got the card back in and powered up.

Needle nose pliers will also work if you have a pair with good enough grip to pull the plug out. Again, be very, very careful.

On the bright side, once you get the fan connector off, the rest of the install should be a breeze.

I was able to get it off. The plastic got kind of soft. I took no chance on solder the back in case the thing wouldnt work because it was too loose. The NV silencer works now and thanks for the replies. I just got to say it is pretty tedious the way the 2 pin is locked in like that. I really would've kept the stock cooler, but most people knows that the 6800GT stock cooler really sucks. My temps went down from 65 idle to 50 idle. Huge difference.

Yeah, the 6800GT is a hot little card. It's the reason I went 6800GS over the 6800GT (but mainly because of price). Is your GPU chip making full contact with the copper base? I don't think mine is for some reason...but then again, I'm idling at 40C...so I shouldn't worry.
