Removing Sunbeam Rheobus Silkscreen

Remembered something from high school, where Ray-Bans were cool, but the ridiculous silkscreen on them always looked like something was sitting just out of your range of vision. So we used a penny to scrape it off, the concept being that copper is softer than the lenses. Worked pretty well.

I've always been annoyed by the silkscreen on the Sunbeam Rheobus - you could always get the custom LL ones for over twice the price, but I never thought it was worth it. I've tried goo-gone and acetone, they didn't work, but never wanted to try anything stronger.

Long story short:

1. It works - in general. The texture of the faceplate makes it so very small amounts of the silkscreen won't come off, they're too deep for the wide flat edge of the penny to get to. Something like a copper brush would probably be good for finishing. You can't see the leftovers with the naked eye but a camera picks them up.

2. I got one or two scratches. Not sure where they came from, but I didn't clean the penny first so there may have been some harder particles on there.

3. There's a lot of copper marks left behind. They come off ok with a finger, but to be more thorough I used goo-gone.

4. If you're going to use goo-gone, TAKE YOUR RHEOBUS OUT FIRST. My dvd-rw faceplate does NOT like it.

Will post pics later tonight. It's "good enough" but I think with a copper brush and better planning it would come out better.
