I was just given a new 52" HDTV projection television that was delivered to an AV store and the internal mirror got broken when the tv was dropped as they were unloading it off the truck.

The store just used insurance to replace the tv and so a friend there gave me the tv. The problem is that the insurance company required the store mark the tv both front and back as discard. So the manager there used a cheap $1 can of spray paint to write the words Discard on both the front projection screen and the back of the tv.

I really could care less about the back of the tv, but I do need to get that paint off the front screen.

I know I cant use something like paint remover because of the plastic screen.
Any idea as to what I can use that will not damage the plastic screen ?

If I have to I will purchase a new screen.
The tv retails for 1600.00 so if I have to spend a bit to get it fixed, it will still be worth it.

The Tv is made by hitachi and I found a replacement screen at tiger direct for 150.00, so not bad if I really have to replace it.
The mirror is already ordered, it was only 80.00
Going to try the EtOH and see how that works.
I'll start in a small spot to make sure the screen isn't harmed then move on from there.
Thanks

If there is an antiglare coating, most solvents will harm this as well. If you cannot find etoh, try ipa instead as that is easily found in drug stores. Take the 93% stuff and water it down at least with 4 parts water to 1 parts IPA and use a qtip at first. If you want to be more cautious, use a more dilute solution, say 8:1 at first.

yeah acetone is too strong. And don't use ammonia (windex) either.

How about tape to remove the thicker parts? Depends on the type of paint, but I'm guessing oil based and that it'll be hard to find something to dissolve the paint that also doesn't dissolve the screen.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I tried ethanol , just seemed to clean it up a bit.
I ended up using oven cleaner, the nasty cheap stuff, 1.00 a can.
It takes the paint right off while using a toothbrush .

I stopped though after I removed one area.
The paint they used must have had some kind of solvent because its permanently turned the plastic a yellow color.
I thought it might be the oven cleaner, but its not anywhere the oven cleaner was, only the paint.

Looks like I'll have to replace the screen also.
I thought the screen was 150.00 but turns out the correct one is 300.00 , starting to get pricey to fix this one.
