Removing old, deteriorating carpet padding from wood floor

I ripped mine up a year ago and still have some of the padding sticking around the vents in the computer room. I keep saying I am going to do something about it but I really don't care . Anyway this is just a bump and and easier way for me to find this thread incase somebody can think of something better then a putty knife which is what I planned to use.

How big of an area?

I'd try a putty knife and a hair dryer to heat it up if we're not talking about too big of an area.

Or, I might then look into some of the adhesive removers (even though it's not glued down) like Use Motsenbocker's Lift Off No. 2, Adhesives, Grease and Tape Remover, (800) 346-1633, www.liftoffinc.com.

pretty large area, and a heat gun just made a sticky mess according to another guy who tried. I think I'm just going to try some laquer thinner...

I think you can use mineral spirits,which I believe is different than lacquer thinner, though I may be wrong. Try it in a small area and see if it discolors the stain first.

Yeah, they'd definitely different. I heard laquer thinner should work from a guy I know that has done wood floors before, so we'll see :\

You could also try denatured ethanol... a little less harsh.
