Removing IHS on A64

I have a friend who did. Although it lowered the temp a bit, he ended up chipping the core when he was mounting the waterblock, and so the chip worked fine on VIA chipsets, but not on NF3. This was on a C0 Clawhammer, if it matters.

This is a bad idea. First off, you will have to increase the clamping pressure on your HSF to compensate for the height difference. Otherwise your CPU may end up running hotter. Also, remember all the crushed cores with the AXP's?

I've read about many people doing this, and most are not really getting any OC increase to speak of (some ended up with a decrease). Reason being is that heat is not much of a limiting factor on the A64.

If you want an increase in thermal performance, I'd suggest an XP-120, with AS5. ;)

Does IHS stand for internal heat spreader? If it is, the point of it is to help cool, right?

integrated heat spreader.
dosent really help though as demonstrated by tests. heat dosent transfer laterally very well no it.
really used to only protect the core.

Not quite. Heat doesn't like metal to metal contacts, its the worst for heat transfer when it comes to the interface between a CPU and heatsink. Therefore the goal of this would reduce the number of contact points to 1 instead of 2.

Also, it stands for Integrated Heat Spreader. Mainly, it's there to protect the core from getting crushed.

heat is a factor for me and it limits me

if heat wasnt a factor, why does watercooling (good watercooling that is) usually result in higher overclocks?...heat is always a factor...hence the move to dual core...to REDUCE heat! (among other reasons)

if you do a search on google you'll find a posting at xtremesystems or something where a LOT of people actually did get gains...so i duno what you talking about amaroque

i have an xp120 and AS5 and am looking for a better way to cool at the moment, such as watercooling

back on topic though, i've removed my IHS before and i dont recommend it unless you have a heatsink that requires no mods to fit on the nude cpu, which is the thermalright slk948u

Leave the damn thing on. More than likely you will end up damaging the chip in your attempt in removing it. I guess the only benefit is you will have something to hang on your keychain...

watercooling cools much better than air.

removing the IHS might net you 2-4C loss of heat, whereas the gains for water is much much more.

cooler temps allow the OC'er to jack up the core voltage safely in pursuit of higher OC's.

the liquid nitrogen people run extreme speeds, and extreme vcore's as well.

also removing the IHS might cause more interference and actually might lower your OC.

i've never heard of anyone getting a better OC after removing it, but i have heard of people screwing things up, so i'd leave the thing on. After all, with good cooling, A64s can hit 2.7+ GHz, so even best case scenario, removing the heatspreader might buy you an extra 50MHz - a freakin drop in the bucket - what the hell is that gonna improve? Just keep it safe, it'll be plenty fast for you.
