Removing HSF / CPU from motherboard...

This has probably happened to many people, but I haven't used AS5 on my CPU, so I wouldn't know.

The HSF on a computer doesn't come off easily, if at all, from my Athlon 3500+ clawhammer. How exactly do I get the HSF off without using too much pressure and pulling it out of it's socket by force, damaging the pins?

I've done this with a K-7 and damaged the pins...

Retention clips were released too.

EDit : Main reason I want to remove is so that I can add a new batch of AS5, this one obviously isn't working well since my computer idles at 45C - 47C and goes to about ~64C load with Prime95 or rthdribl. And I can't control the stock fan either, is there any way to always have it running at 2800RPM full power?

try to slowly twist the cooler while you pull. should do the trick

Run Prime95 or other intensive CPU task for 5-10 mins before turning off the computer. Remove HSF while setup is still warm (i.e. right away). Should come off easy that way, compared to when it has cooled to room temp.

Or... a hairdryer works fine too.

Yep, and give it a slight twist too when removing it.

I tried doing it, I had Prime95 and rthdribl run for 5-10 minutes and it hit about 67C. Powered off immediately and tried to remove it.

The HSF was scorching hot, but it still wouldn't come off. This has never happened to me before...ANy other ideas?

You're most likely using too much AS5.

just pull it up... your screwed otherwise... it happend to my 3000+ once but mines fine... just pull strait up and not at any angle.

Yeeep, it's not coming off.

At full load I'm hitting almost 60C, and still after that, it's not coming off.

I.E - When lifting a 500-sheet package of paper up.

the last 3 times that ive removed a hsf from a cpu the damn cpu popped right out...luckily the pins did not bend..

Yeah...this happened to me and I had to spend about 2 hours bending the pins back into their right positions.

It worked fine too.

Try goof off. Turn the board on edge and get a few drops on the seam where the cpu and heat sink meet, should eat right through the old pad or A.S.5.
