Removing Heatsink

Any tips on removing a heatsink? I don't want to take my cards and MB out. I have an A7V133 ASUS mb, with a golden orb heatsink. Trying to use a flathead screwdriver, to push down on the clips, and try to push them outward to unsnap, but to no avail.
Any I using the right tools?


 
put it in the freezer first for 10 minutes before using the screwdriver. It will make the glue harden and easier to remove. I tried it last time with my geforce 2 gts.

Put what in the freezer. The heatsink is over my cpu, which is on my motherboard, which is in my full size tower.

Your Golden Ord has a much different attachment method than most heatsinks : it's a twist-off !

No tools required : just grab around the fins, twist it off (as if it were screwed onto the processor) and off you go ! litterally...

This unique "twist" mount feature is what the Orbs are famous for : ease of installation... (less famous for their actual cooling power, but that's material for another thread...)

About the "glue" : I believe StanTheMan is talking about the thermal pad which might be present at the base of the Orb... However, Golden Orbs don't come with such a nasty pad (which can harden with heat, and give you problem unsticking your heatsink from the processor).

So, unless your heatsink was installed with thermal epoxy instead of thermal grease, I don't see any problem.

Hoping you haven't damaged your board yet...
 
My fault.
My old Heatsink was a golden orb.
This new one, unsure of what brand, but its not a golden orb. It has clamps on each side, the clamp down onto the mb. Silver latches is a better word. So screwdriver is the best method to pop these off?

 
Yes... push down on the clamp, slightly outward(just like you said) and it'll come off. These are always a bit tricky because it feels like youre putting so much pressure onto it that it'll crack something, but thats how ya gotta get em off.
 
run it at full load for a few minutes. Shut down and try to remove before letting it cooldown. This is ofcourse if you use the sticky pad.
screwdriver shoud do the job. But really, taking it out of the case is safer as you have more space to work with.
