Removing CPU from motherboard and failing GPU?

Last Dec my s939 system finally passed on, the mobo died. I've since then moved to a C2D system. But when I originally took apart the system last year I could not get the cpu out. It was pressed pretty hard into the socket (those heatsinks go on real tight! the bottom of the heatsink has a partial groove outline of the cpu!). I didn't really try to force it out as I wasn't planning on using it at the time. But now it's come to where I'd like to use it now.
Anybody have a suggestions for removing the cpu? Should they be fairly hard to get out? I haven't tried it recently but thought I should ask now before I need it out right away.

This one is longer and more involved.
I've been having some gpu hiccups. I still have my 6800gt from my old system. Couple of months ago I had to reapply thermal paste as it was getting to hot to play anything. After that it was fine for quite some time. Played Hl2, TF2 for couple months even with no problems. I was going to get back into Guildwars when I started to get "flickers." I just thought I was having some kind of software problem. But when GW started to hardlock my system I knew something else was up. So suddenly upon one restart I get the nvidia sentinel warning about lack of power and it was going to underclock my gpu for safety. I'd run into this one other time and I believed it was a simple driver issue where I just rolled back to the previous version and was fine. Having upgraded to the newest drivers fairly recently I attributed my problem to that. What all has happened:
-1. Maybe related? Before I redid the thermal paste Rome Total War's loading screen was messed up. Looked like someone had taken the top row of pixels and stretched them down the screen. Really weird and I attributed it to heat issues or software.
0. First time it happened took booting into Safe mood to get windows back up as it was locking&rebooting upon logging into windows (which at first made me think it was a problem with a startup program, ie Steam or Xfire) Note that this was the only time that I got a BSOD. The error message was unfruitful (at best it was linked to bad hardware, faulty drivers, or both...).
1. Rebooted and tried to play on. Was partially successful as long as the warning popped up on boot (it did not start showing up until I was able to boot into windows again after step 0) I was able to play a few times once for about 30mins with no problem but upon closing and restarting the game I'd only be able to play for ~10mins. Screen would get all "fuzzy" (I have a picture just have to find it will update then). Sometimes though it locked the first time I'd play. Tried another game Beyond Good & Evil. I got graphical artifacts (in one area but a reload temporarily fixed it) but it too eventually locked up and rebooted.
2. Wiped drivers (used Driver Cleaner) installed early ones (168.75), tried again with 94.24
3. Finally thinking there really was a physical issue with the power I reseated the gpu and tried a new gpu. Went from my old OCZ 520w to a BFG 800w. (timing was the deciding factor really as I hopped onto hardocp's deal few weeks back) I was slightly bemused as it seemed to work. I didn't get the power warning and BG&E worked. But again trying GWs produced a hardlock followed by a reboot after about 2mins. I also tried another game, GameTaps McGee's Grimm. It played fine until the next to last level which locked up and rebooted. I tried a couple times and the level always caused a lockup and reboot.
So now I've come to the present, I haven't played anything since Grimm save Fallout. But now I'm really wondering if my gpu is dying on me. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. I don't really have the money to get a new one right now; I was actually planning to get another hdd. But if eminent failure is forecasted I'll have to plan on something sooner rather than later.

Never heard of a cpu being jammed in a modern zif socket. You did release the lever didn't you? Have globs of thermal compound gluing it in? More of a description might help.

If you get a power warning from the gpu, might it not suggest a psu problem?

Well you were literally right about the cpu. When I first took my mobo out I wasn't in a big hurry to take the cpu out as I wasn't using it. So I didn't pay particularly good attention to how far I opened the lever. Suffice to say I didn't open it all the way! 😱

As to my gpu I did replace the psu and I haven't been getting the power warnings at boot. I went back and decided to play HL2 to see if it had problems too. And alas it did not. At least as far as I played. I'm now wondering if I have a DX, OGL, or SM problem. Perhaps that is the reason only certain games are crashing on me?

Thanks again for your help though!
