removing baked on thermal compound

I recently went to transplant a cpu from one rig to another, and found that a layer of Radio Shack (never had a problem with it before) thermal compound has baked onto the core. Running alcohol removed most of it, but there are sill a few spots. Recommendations?

I won't say that this stuff will remove it, but even if it doesn't, you need to have it around since it will clean just about anything else, without melting the surface. I've used it to remove Arctic Silver and thermal pads from cpu's and heatsinks, and it doesn't leave a trace. I follow with alcohol to remove any oily residue.

you could also try lapping your heatsink as well to remove any small bumps... 🙂

i had to lap my waterblock after a small piece of whatever crushed the corner of my core...

In my experience 99% isopropyl alcohol have been enough to remove all kinds of thermal transfer material.

16 grit grinding disc and a 3000 RPM air grinder 😀

I use 99% isopropyl alcohol too... have yet to find something it couldn't clean up

The pharmacy here only has 70%, where can I get 99%?

I'd try Goof-Off- readily available, zero residue, it'll dissolve almost any kind of problem residue...

I'll second the recommendation on Goof Off, been using it for years, works wonders, will remove anything. Great Stuff!
