Removing Artic Silver 2 from CPU

nlieber

Senior member
I was attemping to remove some Artic Silver 2 from a 1.33 TBird chip. I was using a q-tip and some acetone (nail polish remover) and it started to smear around the traces on the lower portion of the top. I removed alot of it but have this light silver smear all over the damn chip ( I got a little carried away ). Is this dangerous? I mean have a possibly shorted some of the traces together.
Is there a better cleaner/method? What can I do to finish cleaning this thing up?

Help

I have a way so you dont have to go buy a cleaning kit.
Get some dishwashing liquid soap and squeeze a small amount into a plate. Get some q tips and dip 1 side with a little soap and use that to clean the cpu. Should take the Arctic silver right off. i know cuz i've done it too. afterwards use acetone to clean up and let it dry for a bit.

hope this helps

Just stick it under running water and scrub it gently with your fingers with some dishwashing liquid. I've done it many times with no problems. Just dry it thouroughly before reinstalling. A hair dryer works well for drying.

Well looks like everyone agrees!! Thanks to all that took the time to answer and having more than one of you say dish soap just gives me that much more confidence that it's the right way to go.

Thanks again! It's this kind of help that makes this a great forum.
