Removing and reapplying thermal compound

I have a new heatsink coming in (my current one can't handle my CPU for even 10 minutes) and I want to know how to properly remove and how to properly apply thermal compound. I don't know what kind of thermal paste was used for my currenty heatsink, but I know that I'll be applying Arctic Silver 5 to the new one.

To get off the old stuff, use lighter fluid followed by isopropyl alcohol. The lighter fluid gets rid of most of the old thermal compound and the isopropyl alcohol gets rid of the lighter fluid and whatever is left over.

just pour iso on there and wait 30 seconds and then wipe it off. dont use lighter fluid because it leaves residue even if you coat the cpu with iso after the lighter fluid.

From Arctic Silver's online instructions:

"...use a xylene based cleaner, (Goof Off and some carburetor cleaners), acetone, mineral spirits, or high-purity isopropyl alcohol."

Use a paper towel or something to clean the fluid and old thermal paste off the core. Put a drop in the center of the core, then use a razor blade to spread it evenly across the entire core surface.
