Removing all traces of an aborted XP install

Recenly I was the recipient of a activation free cdr of WinXP. Since I had a free parttion(D🙂 on a new HD with 98SE on the C drive, I thought I would give it a try. Well needless to say it failed early in the install. It did, how ever, manage to load the dual boot front end. I have found Boot.ini, initially I simply renamed it to boot.old and attempted to boot. No good I could not even get to either verision of windows. I have deleted all of the XP files on the d: drive and have set the default to c: in boot.ini so I am now getting into 98 with no troubles. However since it is still using the boot.ini file there are still some XP hooks in the system, how can I clean the system so that I can delete the boot.ini?

Not sure if this will do what you want...boot with a 98 start-up floppy and at the A prompt type: "sys c"

or type "fdisk /mbr" in win98 - that should have the same effect.

So what you all are telling me, is, that the XP dual boot process originates in the OS boot sector. Now that I know, ...... Duh.
Thanks for the info, I have set boot.ini to boot to the c drive as default, that will have to do for now.
