Your question is not very clear. Please re word it.
The preferred method of removing a DC from the AD is to just DCPROMO it down. Perhaps this is not possible. Maybe you lost the DC and now you want to know how to remove the references to it from the AD?
Under no circumstances should you just "erase all the references to it" in AD Sites and Services, etc.
What you should do is use the utility ntdsutil
The MS KB article that will step you through the process is here.
Good luck, and be careful. You can totally destroy the AD doing this if you mess up. If this is production equipment, I would suggest to you that you are in over your head and you should ask someone for help. If it's your own network, go nuts.
Agree, the question isn't too clear. We've had somebody turn off a DC, and remove the subnet! We had to re-create the subnet in a lab, ship the server in, and power it up again, just so we could do a DCPROMO demotion.
sorry guys, i cut and pasted my post but did not get all of it.here is what we are doing:
I joined this server (named aval-dc01) into our network.Installed a.d. and made a tape backup.(I am testing disaster recovery!)
Accidently deleted that tape.Reinstalled the o.s. from a ghost image I had made earlier, without a.d.Now I believe I have to
remove aval-dc01 from a.d.(sites and services)but I recieve an error😀SA object cannot be deleted.I ran ntdsutil but cannot
connect to aval-dc01 because it no longer exists. It does exist but not with a.d. anymore. How can I remove this from a.d. so I can joint this server again using the same name and install a.d. again?
I already gave you the answer to the problem then.
NTDSUTIL will take care of the issue.
I used to support MCSE classes and they pulled this kinda stunt all the time. There are a LOT of commands and switches with ntdsutil. Read the article I linked to and follow the steps. Read more if you are unclear.
I would strongly suggest that you remove the rebuilt server of the same name from the domain, and leave it powered off until you've cleaned up your AD. Once all the references to the lost DC are gone from the domain (don't forget to wait long enough for the clean-up to replicate through-out your environment), then you should be able to start all over again.
