Removing 98 from a 98/XP dual boot - please confirm

Hello,

After reading the Anandtech FAQ concerning the removal of an operating system from a dual boot machine, I wanted to confirm my findings before I actually did it 🙂

This is my boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

From this, you can see that I have WIN98 on the C: and WinXP on the D:. From the boot.ini and under system properties, the computer is telling me that XP is the default OS. I had originally thought that it was going to be WIN98 since it was on the C: and I originally was only going to try XP. But it looks like I made XP the main OS. From the FAQ, it seems to be telling me that since I want to remove 98 and it is noy my default OS, I can just format c: and remove the C:\"Microsoft Windows" from the boot.ini file.

Is this a correct assumption? Am I going to run into trouble having everything on the D:? I rarely use 98 anymore but I think I cannot just rename D: to C: after I am done because of registry issues ... correct? It does not matter to me if I have to leave the main OS partition as D: and have C: as a storage drive. It would be easier on others using the computer but they don't really count 🙂

Can someone please let me know if I am on track or way off on anything. Thanks.

Whatever you do must heed the following constraints: XP crive must remain D: (you must not change the drive letter of any NT installation, else problems), and boot files must remain on C:. The simplest course, therefore, would be to simply delete everything on C: but whatever data you want to keep and, most importantly, the XP boot files (NTLDR, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini). You can then use C: for data storage, programs, or whatever.

OK, even though Xp is the default OS, since 98 is on the primary partition (C🙂, I cannot format it since it contains vital boot information ... correct? I think I got confused since XP was the primary OS but it really comes down to what is on the C:?

So I can unistall any programs on the C drive and remove the program files directory. The FAQ says to delete the WIN98 directory. Does this mean the windows folder or win98, if I have the cab files installed on the C drive? Would the important files be in the windows folder or just on C: itself.

Thanks for the reply!

I think you could give the foll. program a try:
I foud it at one of the newsgroup, cant seem to remember where though. It is good!
The program is called EZBoot, and it can be found

Forum for this Programhere

You will need a floppy drive for this, though!

Rather than a copy-edit-paste job from the creator's website (by me) I think you could try doing some reading yourself...after all, I am too lazy to to do even a c-e-p job!

Good luck!!
