Removed one 512mb stick of RAM and MS XP said..

I have an Asus p4p800 deluxe mobo and had 3 stick of 512mb pc2700. 2 sticks were identical (micron) one stick was not (simpletech). I remove the simpletech module and moved one micron into the blue slot so I can get dual channel linear on the memory. It worked obviously, but when Winxp loaded a message came up saying " Windows XP has noticed many hardware changes recently and needs to be reactivated within 3 days". I let it reactivate and it worked but it annoyed the sh!t out of me that MS XP is monitoring my system to the point that if I install, remove or change hardware that XP needs to be reactivated. I hate this "Big Brother is Watching You" tactics that MS is doing. Has this happened to anyone else? This is the first time I have ever seen this. MS Bastards!

Mine did that to me after swapping everything in my rig once to figure out what was going wrong.

This is a well known aspect of XP. Where were you when everyone was screaming bloody murder about activation/reactivation?

Having said all that, my guess is that something happened to your registry, since just changing the memory around should not require reactivation.

Perhaps you have changed a few other things in the past, and the memory module tripped you over the reactivation threshold for hardware changes?

usually takes a few changes to pop that up but ..it is a M$ product 😉

I've changed hardware around a lot on my main rig, and XP never complains.

YMMV, but for the most part (unless you are constantly changing out pieces of hardware)
that should not happen that often.

I could understand you freaking out if it was doing that every month, or if it does it every time
you change something on the system. But you give no indication of how long you have had
this rig running, or how many other changes may have taken place on it in the past 6 months.

There must be a secret number of changes. In the last six months Ive change the vid card once, added 2 HDs and removed the memory. Also within the six month period I have unplugged and replugged the HDs (I have six in the case) to find the one that was spinning up and down. I'm gonna research how many changes you can make before Big Brother needs comforting. 🙂

Its not a "secret" number of changes... I don't recall the exact number, but I do believe
it counts them within a 6 month period, then starts counting again from zero.
And yes, changing some things counts as more than one hardware change, because it can
affect how the rest of the system looks to the device manager.

Maybe a forum (or google) search will come up with the exact numbers.

Once I enabled the built-in ethernet port on my motherboard and WinXP said the same thing. I was surprised.

I've installed other stuff (new graphics card, sound card, video capture card) in the past and I'd never gotten that message.

Last I saw it's not a simple 'number of changes'. Some changes don't matter much, and some are "more equal than others" (I think ethernet was particularly likely to cause 'reactivation').

It's such a terrible system. I've managed to avoid being locked out of using my legally purchased winXP so far - it pisses me off constantly though.

What version of Windows XP?
I have retail version on generic pc, need to do reactivation even after flashed the bios.
I also have hp pc with hp's oem version, even no need to do activation from first time use, never need to do re-activation for adding or changing hardware inside.

I've had this happen when switching to a new mobo. It happens. Dont worry about it, it is just a basic form of copy protection.
