Remove uninstall backups of updates in XP

I've noticed there are lots of hidden folders with $ in the Windows folder. These store backups of updates so you can uninstall. If my system running fine, can I remove them? If I do, how can I remove reference to these in Control Panel/Add Remove Prog and will Automatic Update knows what updates I already got next time I run it? It seems to keep track of a history of updates but I couldn't find where Windows stores that.

Starrx,

I've always removed them and never seen any "unintended consequences." Unless of course later on you did want to remove one of them for some reason.

I just delete them and move on...

I think if you try to remove their reference in Add/Remove, and they're gone, you'll get the option to remove the reference.
