Well I'm getting a few popups on my work computer, but I'm not able to install adaware since I am not the admin. Some things I am able to install like trillian, I guess I can install things that don't write to the registry or something...

Is there anything else out there I can use? Maybe something web-based? Maybe something that works in the same fashion of the free virus scan at housecall.antivirus.com?

Thanks in advance!!

Spyware thats writes to the hosts file, or the system directory can only be removed as administrator (some can be removed as a power user).

If you aren't an administrator, you can become one by changing the admin password: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Advice: don't step on your sysadmin's toes. They have LONG memories for that kind of thing. You want a new computer when the next batch comes in, don't you? ;) So color inside the lines. Submit a work request or whatever your work's procedure is. If you were intended to have the power, they would've given it to you.

You should be able to uninstall any spyware as a non-admin that you were able to get installed in the first place as a non-admin.

You'll just need to know what it is.

Unless you've got weird system admins, like where my dad works. They saw at some point that he'd installed Spybot, and they freaked out. It had the word "spy" in it, so it had to be bad, right?
It was interesting though that his PC had no popups, while many others in the building had them coming up at random.

I guess he could ask if they'd give him Admin rights on the system for the purpose of getting rid of the adware, if it has adware. I have about 75 "kids" in my care and with Restricted User accounts, the typical adware (Bonzi Buddy, Gator, Precision Time, Weatherbug, etc) cannot install, making removal tools unnecessary to start with. Plus we have VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 cleared to nuke anything it recognizes as spyware/adware, no questions asked, and the employees cannot disable it either. An ounce of prevention... heck, make it a pound of prevention, I like prevention

homestarmy, what kind of adware do you suspect it's caught?
