I have a gainward Ti200 on route from newegg. i want to pop off the ramsinks to verify that it has 4ns mem. Can someone leave me some directions on how to remove the sinks, and then how to put them back on?

I do not want to damage the card in any way, becuase if it does not have 4ns mem, it is going back to newegg.

I appreciate any information (or links) on how to do this.

regards,
Rantis

After damaging the video card, you plan on sending it back to Newegg? :disgust:

Do i need to rephrase my sentence for you? It seems like plain clear english to me. but ok for your sake i will reword it so that you can understand.

"I do not want to damage the card in any way" - i will take the utmost care with the card.

"because" - this indicates that the reason why i will take utmost care of the card is to follow.

"if it does not have 4ns mem, it is going back to newegg" - i would like to return the card if it does not have 4ns mem. Now the prior 2 segments of my sentence make it pretty clear that I have the integrity and honor to understand that if I damage the card in the process of doing this check then the card is mine, 4ns or not.

<sarcasm>Oh, and by the way, thanks for your help.</sarcasm>

The ramsinks can be removed by using a flat blade (butterknife, pocketknife etc) and a credit card. The credit card protects the PCB and components. Place the blade between the CC and the sink. Twist. Putting the card into an airtight bag and placing it into your freezer prior to removing the sinks can make the adhesive more rigid and therefore easier to remove.

You will find that most manufacturers secure the sinks with thermal tape. This tape loses effectiveness if it is "reused". Your replacing option would be to scrape the tape off (a messy job) or remove it with some chemical. Rebonding of the sinks could be done with thermal tape or epoxy.

Now, removing the sinks to verify the ram type and rebonding them is cool if you plan to keep the card. It voids the warranty though.

I sure as heck wouldn't want to buy a card which was returned/repackaged after someone was messing around with the ram sinks... especially if they need to ask for instrutions on how to go about doing it...

edit ->

a quick utilization of the "search" feature has learned me that

There are two versions, the first version that has 4.5 ns mem with no ramsinks n a red crystal orb. The 2nd had 4 ns mem with ramsinks n a silver n red orb.

So, if it has ramsinks, it should have 4ns memory. Perhaps just call and ask Newegg which you are getting and save yourself the hassle of removing the ramsinks.

Thank you merlocka for such a detailed response. I did not realize that the removal of the ramsinks would be such a tedious task.

Well said and i fully agree with you now that i see it is such an involved task.

I will not mess with the card. I will not attempt such a tedious task on a brand new card that i may yet return. (sorry if i gave some of you cardiac arrest;) ). All i will do is try to overclock it. if it overclocks well then that will be enough for me. :D
