Remove outer layer of LCD Monitor screen?

I had a freak accident with a large nail file a while back. It was on my case, slightly over the edge. I hit it, and it flipped up and scratched my monitor as deep as it possibly could have. It's a small series of scratches, but so annoying every time I read text behind it. I tried toothpaste on it, to no avail whatsoever.

Can one take apart LCD monitors, remove the "plastic" screen, and leave the true display exposed?

Monitor: NEC MultiSync LCD1765

ALLRIGHT THEN! FINE! THAT'S FINE! I might try something eventually, like ripping the front off and using a pane of glass. Right before I'm about to buy a new monitor.
