I have a blog-type site and some of the members have links in their posts to a certain newspaper.

This newspaper contacted me and said in no uncertain terms that we were not given permission to link to their site. The gave me the phone/email of their legal counsel if I would have any further questions.

This kind of sucks.

What is your blog site about? Unless is has to do with some freaky stuff I have no idea whay the newspaper would not appreciate the extra traffic?

It's not against the law to link to someone. There's really nothing they can do to you.

Contact their counsel, ask how the posting/reposting of links to publicly available information is illegal.

I really want to hear their answer, as liking other sites is the whole foundation of the internet.

Yeah, I don't see a problem. Try and do the blog anonymously and when they contact you, tell them to fvck off.

Even better, post the letter on your blog along with the link and see if you can get it on Digg or whatever that site is. :p

Are you hotlinking to images, or linking to articles that are in a subscription section of their site?

if they're hotlinking images that's one thing. or if they're avoiding a subscription login.

but if they're linking to a regular article i can't see what the problem is. you should send an email to them stating that you don't appreciate groundless threats.

Do what other blog sites do and POST THE ENTIRE LETTER on your site and then link to their site.

They're making a legal-style threat that they have no legal grounds to threaten.. Basically, they're probby referring you to their legal department hoping that would be enough. Just post the letter.. then send a letter back asking the legal grounds for the request.
