Quick question guys,

Do i remove the integrated heat spreader from the retail P4 or do i leave it on when i apply the Slk-947U? on the thermalright sight the IHS is left on but i think that it would be 2x redundant b/c u are adding a layer...thanks everyone!

Leave it on unless you want to risk ripping the core off the substrate.

you'll see little temp improvement if you remove it plus you're more likely to crush the core!

Thank you guys,

I just remember a big controversy in these forums about the pentium 4's and the IHS pros/cons...

How hard should i tighten the 4 bolts on the heatsink. i dont want to crack my core. just enough so it seems like a nice, airtight fit or until it gets hard to continue twisting..i really want to baby this processor!

Removal isn't that hard - just slide a sharp edge around the sides of the IHS and pop it off. Just be careful that you don't nick the core by cutting too far into the IHS "seal." Supposedly you should see 4C change in temps, but I think that is at-load. And be careful not to crack the core by tightening your HSF down too tightly.

My thoughts are that if you are a hard-core overclocker and are trying to push the envelope go for it. If you're just trying to get 3-3.2GHz out of a 2.4C, don't worry about it.

Starting out with a 2.8C @ 3.2 1:1 memory ratio with my Corsair XMS pc3700....I will test prime on it for a little bit and then switch over to SOB(distributed computing client) and run that for a while. If nothing is wrong and my temperatures are in check i will move on.
A few stipulations that i will have are:

-Memory 1:1 @ pretty aggressive timings
-Minor if any increase in voltage
