remove fan gaurds?

If its not broke dont fix it!

unless you know what you are doing, playing around with a PSU can be very dangerous...do you know how to drain the transistors?

That kind of fan guard really doesn't block air much. The guards are made of bend cylinders - cylinders aren't good at blocking airflow. The air flows right around the surface, rejoins at the other side with a little bit of turbulence and keeps on going.

Stamped fan guards http://www.directron.com/rs380pmsr.html can block some airflow because they have flat sides - air smacks right into it. Those can be sliced out and replaced with wire fan grilles such as are on your current power suppy. But again, that requires opening up the power supply, which can be quite dangerous.


Summary - those fan grilles are fine, and add very little restriction to airflow. Leave them in. Unprotected fans aren't a good idea. You may think you'll never get a finger near there, but the first time you bump against that fan guard, you'll be glad it's there.
 
ok, i see what you mean. even if i did hit my finger in there once, it wouldnt do any damage or anything. but i guess ill leave it then. and why are you talking about the dangers of powersupplys? the fan gaurds come off really easily with 4 screws from the outside of the psu. i know psu's are dangerous but its such a simple task. so i dont see why it would be so dangerous.
 
most PSUs i have seen and I'm sure the same applies to N00b have the fan grills mounted so that one would have to open the PSU
 
my psu fan (antec truepower with lo-noise technology) is inaudible and the fans spin a bit fast. but my cpu fan, thats a killer to your finger when its hot. but don't take the wire thing off as it does nothing to disrupt airflow.

If you drop a screw in there, it might not be easily convinced to come back out.

Precisely - transistors don't hold a charge. Capacitors on the other hand....discharge a big one of those with a screwdriver, and you might a) damage the capacitor, or b) arc-weld it to the terminals. Discharge a big one of those with yourself, and you might wind up with serious injuries.

If you drop a screw in there, it might not be easily convinced to come back out.

but the screws wont fall inside.... they are are simple to take off from the outside. im sure i can manage for it to not fall in. but i decided to not take them off anyway so it doesnt matter anymore.
