I own Asus G551VW FY212T. It is a real pain in the ass how laptops have limited space for storage. I can't add a hdd & ssd in laptop unless I remove the blu ray drive. I can't stand the slow storage speeds from the seagate hybrid drive. The seagate hybrid drive is just too slow I'm not pleased :( How can I add hdd bay on this laptop?

You would need some kind of a caddy...
For example this one: (note, I have no idea if this will actually fit your unit...)

Though, I would replace the hybrid with an actual SSD, and move the hybrid to the caddy.

You can also just get a big ssd, depending on your budget.

And get an external enclosure for the 1tb.

You got options, just depends on what you needm

Don't know if this situation has changed, but I had swapped out a 500GB WD Blue 2.5" from my older laptop and replaced it with an MX100 512GB. I hadn't paid attention to the electrical specs.

That SSD -- not very old, either -- consumed as much as double the wattage of a lappie spinner. It explained the life of my batter charge when the lappie was unplugged.

I replaced the SSD with a 1TB HGST 2.5". Sold the MX100 to a friend.

. . And I just added a 2TB MX300 to my desktop. That's a whol different ball-game.

The MX100 has lower power usage than the HGST... http://www.storagereview.com/crucial_mx100_ssd_review
Power consumption:
  • Idle: 100mW
  • Active Average: 150mW
That is .1W & .15W respectively.
The HD: http://www.storagereview.com/hgst_travelstar_7k1000_review
Power
  • Requirement: Start-up (W, peak, max) 5.5
  • Requirement: Read/Write (W, avg) 1.8
  • Requirement: Low power idle (W, avg) 0.8
  • Requirement: Standby (W, avg) 0.2
  • Dissipation: Seek (W, Avg) 2.1
  • Dissipation: Active Idle (W, Avg) 1.0
  • Performance Idle 1.7
  • Sleep (W) 0.1
So, how exactly did the MX100 use double the power?

I'll have to recheck that, but the difference was clear on the labels I compared. A retired Electron-Tech friend tipped me about it. The way I have that old lappie set up, though, there's no degradation to performance with the HDD replacement, and of course -- more space.

If I said "double," it was either an exaggeration or a number I pulled out of the air for my recollection.

I could sort through all this and get to the bottom of it. It was just my memory of things -- no attempt to mislead.
