Removal of Win98 w/o removing files

I have a OEM version of Windows XP that I would like to put on my 98 machine. I would like to keep the programs and files on the computer and just remove 98 and put XP on. The OEM version of XP doesn't have an upgrade option and the add/remove programs can't remove 98. Is there any way that I can upgrade without formatting? Thanks

Besides the license issues (an OEM copy Windows XP is most likely to be licensed for use only on the PC it came with, that is why there is no "upgrade" option). In any case, you can't "remove" the old OS and keep the programs/settings since these are stored in the registry anyhow. You either need to upgrade (always, always a bad idea to upgrade a 9x machine to a NT based OS) or format.
