Remotely accessing mp3 files...is there a way?

I have a good number of music files on my computer and I'd like to be able to access them from anywhere. I'm on a college network, so I have plenty of bandwidth - I was thinking of starting a Shoutcast stream and having it play when I leave the room. Is this a valid idea? Is there any way I'd be able to choose individual songs to play instead of streaming them?

Thanks!

Shoutcast works well, assuming that you have plenty of CPU power, bandwidth and memory. I've used it to stream from my DSL connection to the T1 (or so) at work. It will probably work really well over the college network since you won't be going out on the big scary internet.

mount it wherever you go. samba/nfs, whichever is easiest for you. One of my co-workers (back when I worked) had his set up that he could access his windows shares by //<IP>/<sharename> with a username/pw of course.

run an apache server. you can make your mp3 directory password protected.
just drag and drop the links into winamp's playlist, and it'll stream them.

Running a server on the U of M's network is strictly prohibited. I'm thinking that mounting the shares over samba would be cool...how would I go about doing it though?

My "database" of mp3s uses icecast to stream mp3s from my linux box...I use AOL IM as a remote interface to search, que, play the mp3s.

Wow myplay.com died huh ? It used to allow GIGS of storage for your MP3s (you upload them via the web) and you can play them directly off the page.

i dont think they'd care, especially if you password protected it.
if youre running 2k/xp, you can use the admin shares.
go to a remote computer, start-> run "\\youriphere\c$\"
Then enter your Administrator login and you should be there.
