My wife had mentioned to me that for her birthday she would like a remote start for her Jetta. I looked on the vwvortex forums and there wasn't any specific mention on the Jetta but other models had issues with getting it installed.

I called over to the VW dealership and they said they do not install the remote starts. I went over to Best Buy to see what they said but I was very reluctant to having those guys touch my car.

My wife is going to be taking our son to work in the morning to drop him off at day care and we'd like to have the car warm when transporting him. We live in NY and the winter can get kind of cold.

Its almost impossible to bypass the VW proprietary alarm system without a lot of rewiring and work. To my knowledge there really isnt a "safe" way to do this.

pretty much any newer car needs to see a signal from the key to start. that's why a lot of cars are moving toward keyless ignitions- the lock cylinder just isn't nearly as hard to defeat as the anti-theft.

i wouldn't want to hack my way around that.

A quick search says that you need to hardwire a new bypass module into the ignition and lock cylinder with a valet key taped into the ignition. This is then hidden under the dash and you no longer need a key to start the vehicle.

I really dont think you want to do that...

That's a CANBUS car I believe so if someone is familiar with those modules it shouldn't be too difficult.

It really isn't that hard. Any modern car will have the same type of immobilizer system that your Jettas has, you'll just need to use a valet key to bypass it. The only difference for you will be that VWs have the alarm buttons integrated into the key, so you'll need to carry a fob for the remote starter in addition to your regular key.

Any independent stereo/alarm shop would be a safe bet if you don't want to trust Best Buy (I wouldn't). You can even do it yourself in a couple hours if you're familiar with basic electronics. Your profile says you're on LI, if you want to take it up yourself I'd probably be willing to help you out for a case or two of beer.

Thanks for the offer but I'd rather not mess around with the thing. If anything I would have liked the remote to work straight from the key and not have to carry around another module. My focus came with a remote start and I just have to press the "lock" button three times.
